OLIVIER ZAHM — What qualities do you like in a man?

OLYMPIA LE-TAN — A sense of humor. A man has to be funny. I like cynical people. People who are funny and dry and aren’t afraid to tell racist jokes. Weird people. People who aren’t politically correct. I also like handsome people. It’s difficult to find all those things in one person.

Since when did the ability to tell racist jokes become a positive quality? I don’t ask for much in life, but I would like not to be treated like a fucking punchline. I’m not one for being outraged (despite my many, many, many rants here and on my SL column) but for fuck’s sake, this is 2012. 2012! It’s depressing that the only time people want to talk about race is to say that it doesn’t matter (i.e. the Floyd Mayweather/Jeremy Lin debacle) or to talk about problems within a community (i.e. the Grant Hill/Jalen Rose Uncle Tom debacle).

And if I’m honest, I’m really bored of talking about race. I just want to get on with my life on the basis that I’m treated like an individual with quirks, flaws, assets and all the other strange stuff that goes into being a human being. But while that doesn’t happen, I’ll have to write more posts like this.
